If someone where to tell you that exercise is good for you, what would your response be? I’m sure it’s something you’ve heard plenty of times or is something you are fully aware of. But are we staying on top of our own commitments or do they simply get swept under the rug and forgotten?

Many people do not exercise regularly but even more do not exercise at all. Those same people wish they could shed a few pounds. So what’s the problem?

When we were children and were up and running, we couldn’t stay still no matter how much we tried. Our stamina was high and our energy levels were through the roof, but of course that’s what being a kid is all about. The older we get the more exhausted our minds become, thus our willingness to actively get up and go for a run. For most people, this exhaustion begins when we start college due to academic demands and lack of organized sports. We have the tendency of looking at life changes as an occasion to blow up the old rules and not replace them with new ones. This is especially so when it comes to getting fit since college is our first big transition in life and becomes an excuse to not exercise.

The pattern of excuses and exhaustion goes on wheel of repetitiveness caused by a high stressed job, new relationship or even starting a family. Many people don’t like to exercise which is why it is the first thing to go when you get the opportunity to rearrange your schedule.

Researchers have linked the issue to psychology and that self control is like a psychological muscle and that can become exhausted. Every day life challenges can make it hard to maintain your composer and you have no discipline left to stick to your fitness routine. A routine diet can also exhaust your self-control muscle when trying to keep yourself from eating something you want but cannot have.

In addition not having a defined exercise routine plan can affect you too. Simple changes to routine can make a huge difference with just a little a day. Having someone for support can help motivate you but no longer having the person there can make you dependable on that person to stick to your workout routine and will decrease your chances of self-efficacy.

  1. Have a plan (a specific commitment to job three days a week, for example, is better than a general resolve to “exercise more”)
  2. Stay firm (a life change like a new job or a new baby is a great excuse to quit exercising. Don’t fall for it)
  3. Don’t overdo the trainer (a little coaching is nice, but your need to develop the self efficacy to keep exercising on your own)

Children And Obesity

 

When a child is sitting across a television set their minds are lost in a world of creativity and imagination. But how does it affect their health?

It is predicted that the time spent watching TV would have a greater effect on obesity as an adult rather than what they ate or how much physical activity they got.

A study done in New Zealand studied over 1,000 children born between 1972 and 1973 and ages 5-15. Researchers calculated their body mass index along with their television watching habits reported by the children and their parents.

When the children reached the age of 26, about 41% of them were overweight or obese. Their body mass index was very close to the amount of TV they watched as a child.

The researchers speculated that the amount of time they spent watching television was closely related to how much they ate and exercised.

The study was published online in the Journal of Obesity.

The study concludes that reducing the time children spent in front of the television, might be the best way of reducing future obesity. It is advised to try doing something else with their time thus reducing TV ad of junk food, carbonated drinks and sweets.

 

Vitamin C Against Asthma

Relief can be found in fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants for people with asthma but Vitamin C, in particular, can soothe inflammation in the lungs of someone asthmatic. Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine can also prevent asthma attacks induced by exercise.

Fruits such as kiwis, oranges, mandarins, and strawberries are a tasty way to increase your Vitamin C and aid adults and children to breathe easier. Although it isn’t proven to cure it has shown to prevent.

Spinal stenosis is a debilitating disorder that causes a narrowing of the passageways for spinal nerves. Although it is most common in people over 50, it can affect the young through injury or a birth defect. Not everyone with this disorder has symptoms but about 250,000 to 500,000 Americans do and can grow significantly as the population ages. 

In order to get a better understanding of what causes these problems, it is best to understand the anatomy of the spine. The spine is an incredibly complex structure of bone and cartilage that provides stability when standing and flexibility when bending. The spine houses over 31 nerves that enable the brain to tell the rest of the body what to do.

The spine is a column of 26 bones in which 24 are vertebrae – 7 in the neck (cervical), 12 in the upper back (thoracic), and 5 in the lower back (lumbar). The remaining two are fused vertebrae that form the sacrum in the hip region and the coccyx at the base of the spine.

Facet joints link the vertebrae together and stabilize the spine and allows it to bend. Ligaments are what keep the vertebrae in place while moving and fibrous disks with jellylike centers provide cushioning between them.

The spinal cord, a long bundle of 31 nerves, from the base of the brain to the second lumbar vertebra, passes through a bony channel called the spinal canal. On its way, two spinal nerves – one to the left and one to the right side of the body – emerge between the vertebrae and another bundle of nerves, the cauda-equina, extends from the end of the spinal cord.

If the channel for the spinal cord and its many extensions become narrowed, pressure on the nerves can cause pain, cramping, tingling, or numbness in the area served by the nerve.

Here are some signs, symptoms and treatment associated with the effects of pressure on the nerves:

  • Pain or cramping in the legs (especially when standing for long periods or when walking)
  • Radiating pain in the back and hip (sciatica, that typically begins in buttocks and worsens when sitting)
  • Shoulder and neck pain, headaches or loss of balance (resulting in frequent falls or clumsiness)
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control (when the cauda-equina is involved)

Since spinal stenosis is a progressive disorder, without the proper treatment, it will gradually worsen. Even as it progresses, symptoms can come and go. Most people, however, do not seek medical treatment for their symptoms and excuse their discomfort to the inevitable consequences of ageing. Experts have said that any pain or stiffness that limits mobility and is not the result of overexertion or unusual exercise, is not normal and should be medically evaluated.

Certain symptoms call for a more immediate attention like sudden difficulty controlling bowels or bladder. Likewise, if numbness develops in an extremity, it is at greater risk of injury, muscle atrophy and permanent loss of sensation. Various diagnostic tests are used to check for spinal stenosis or other problems that cause similar symptoms. Such tests include: spinal x-rays, CT scans, a CT myelogram, a bone scan and an M.R.I.

There are a variety of nonsurgical remedies that do not correct the problems but can relieve the symptoms and reduce recurrence. Drug remedies such as over-the-counter or prescription pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs. There are people who get a shot of corticosteroid into the spinal fluid that suppresses inflammation and relives sciatic pain whenever symptoms are severe enough.

Physical therapy may help relieve symptoms and reduce recurrences as well as strengthen, and increase endurance and flexibility. Regular and proper stretching is vital to pain relief and to teach you how to relieve symptoms when they occur and improve the spine’s stability.

There are a number of strategies to keep in mind in order to delay age-related changes such as:

  • Regular stretching
  • Regular exercise
  • Strength training
  • Maintain normal body weight
  • Use good body mechanics

Rushing Out The Doctor’s Office Can Have Serious Consequences

When you walk into a hospital there are multiple tests and analysis done to rule out a serious disorder, but what happens when you don’t stay long enough to find out the results?

Unfortunately this scenario is not uncommon with lab results abandoned when the patient leaves the hospital and most importantly, serious to even fatal results are overlooked. When patients do not receive the proper diagnosis or treatment plan, they end up waiting too long to get the care they need.

An outpatient setting is just as complicated, if not more, since they deliver the vast majority of medical care in the United States. A good example is about a 42-year old high school French teacher who had gone in for a physical in which they inquired about her last pap smear. She mentioned she had received the test at her gynecologist’s just three weeks earlier but had assumed that “no news is good news.” However, she was wrong. The teacher’s pap smear report revealed the presence of early cervical cancer but the report was buried at the bottom of the pile of papers on her busy physician’s desk. If she hadn’t called and asked for the results, they might have stayed buried. The teacher underwent a hysterectomy for early cervical cancer and has an excellent prognosis.

Knowing how to prevent this from happening to you is one way to begin to fix the problem. Taking charge of your own medical information by following these steps will help:

  • Know what kind of tests are being done, why they’re being done, and when the results will be ready.
  • Ask for copies of all lab and imaging tests, such as CT scans, MRI’s and sonograms.
  • Ask for clarification of anything you don’t understand in a report.
  • Make note of any future follow-up requested in a report.
  • Ask that you be made a copy whenever a consultant or specialist writes to your primary-care physician.
  • Carry an up-to-date list of all medications and dosages with you at all times.
  • Combine all into your very own medical record.

ADHD: Is Medication the Key?

A child diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is often given medication in order to provide the kind of control needed to “stay still”. However, what are the long term effects for children in their later adult lives over those who never received medication?

A study conducted in Finland on over 457 children discovered the evolution of ADHD with and without medication. The children were studied from birth to about early teen years and compared among those with definitive ADHD and children with behavioral issues. Those kids compared to the ones without ADHD diagnosis were shown to have problems with cognitive skills that are key to success in their adulthood. Researches are trying to dictate whether children who are typically stereotyped as having ADHD were being overlooked for something they may out grow later in their future.

The key finding in the research suggests treating children who have definitive ADHD might best be treated by shoring up weaknesses in underlying cognitive skills rather than focusing exclusively on behavioral symptoms.
