When a child is sitting across a television set their minds are lost in a world of creativity and imagination. But how does it affect their health?
It is predicted that the time spent watching TV would have a greater effect on obesity as an adult rather than what they ate or how much physical activity they got.
A study done in New Zealand studied over 1,000 children born between 1972 and 1973 and ages 5-15. Researchers calculated their body mass index along with their television watching habits reported by the children and their parents.
When the children reached the age of 26, about 41% of them were overweight or obese. Their body mass index was very close to the amount of TV they watched as a child.
The researchers speculated that the amount of time they spent watching television was closely related to how much they ate and exercised.
The study was published online in the Journal of Obesity.
The study concludes that reducing the time children spent in front of the television, might be the best way of reducing future obesity. It is advised to try doing something else with their time thus reducing TV ad of junk food, carbonated drinks and sweets.
